Arable

Sustainably managed

We specialise in the sustainable production and procurement of feedstock crops and cash crops – including maize, sugar beet, triticale, grass, wheat and straw – for sale and use in our anaerobic digestion (AD) plants.

Cultivating sustainable feedstocks

As part of the Pretoria Energy Group, our arable farming division manages over 10,000 hectares of land within a 50-mile radius of our AD plants.

This local-first approach reduces transportation emissions and ensures a reliable, home-grown supply of biomass.

In addition, Genesis Biomass (joint venture) operate 20 balers across East Anglia, processing straw sourced from our farms and partners. The straw is pre-treated with digestate and steam (recovered from our system), creating a conditioned, high-performance feedstock for our anaerobic digesters.

We begin where sustainability matters most – the soil.

Our mission

With over 15 years of experience, Pretoria Energy manages over 10,000 hectares annually and has built long-standing partnerships with farmers across the East of England. We aim to operate within a 50‑mile radius of our sites in Cambridgeshire.

Crop production and land management

Contract growing

You grow the crop with our agronomic support (advice on varieties, input strategy, and best practices). Once the crop reaches the target dry matter, we handle harvesting and pay you a competitive £/tonne price over a certified weighbridge.

Land rental

You may prefer to rent land to us. We offer straightforward land rental agreements with fair and competitive rates, determined by field assessment.

Our main crops are maize, triticale and sugar beet but our cropping also extends to cash crops of wheat which benefit from our break crops. Our aim is to provide a profitable and rewarding rotation that works for both us and the landowner.

Tailored contracts

We understand that not every farm operates the same way. For example, you may wish to grow the crop while Pretoria Energy provides specific operations such as drilling or input supply. We offer competitively priced seed and fertiliser, with deductions taken after harvest.

Straw procurement

Through our sister company, Genesis Biomass, we also purchase large volumes of wheat and barley straw each year – either directly behind the combine or pre‑baled.

We’re approachable, sensitive and understanding of agri-business and very open to developing long term relationships which work for both parties and are truly sustainable.
