What is biomethane?

Biomethane is a renewable gas produced by upgrading biogas generated through anaerobic digestion (AD).

During the anaerobic digestion process, organic materials such as energy crops, agricultural residues and other biodegradable feedstocks are naturally broken down by microorganisms in an oxygen-free environment. This creates biogas, which is then refined to remove impurities, producing high-quality biomethane.

Because biomethane has similar properties to conventional natural gas, it can be used in many of the same ways while offering a significantly lower carbon footprint.

Why is biomethane important?

Biomethane provides a practical, renewable alternative to fossil natural gas and supports the UK’s ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
