A Decade of Growth, Innovation and Renewable Progress

Since our founding in 2012, Pretoria Energy has been driven by a clear purpose: to help transform the UK’s energy landscape through sustainable innovation, long‑term investment, and the delivery of reliable renewable energy solutions.

What began as a clear ambition has grown into a diverse renewable energy group with a strong operational footprint across anaerobic digestion, green gas production, and low‑carbon transport infrastructure.

Laying the Foundations

A major milestone in Pretoria Energy’s early journey came in 2014 with the commissioning of our first anaerobic digestion (AD) plant at Chittering, Cambridgeshire. This was followed by the successful launch of the Mepal AD plant in 2017, firmly establishing our presence in the biogas sector and demonstrating our capability to deliver complex renewable infrastructure projects safely and efficiently.

These projects set the tone for our approach—combining robust engineering, operational excellence, and a long‑term commitment to sustainability.

Investing for Long-Term Growth

Between 2018 and 2020, Pretoria Energy completed a full company refinance and welcomed new investors to the business. This pivotal period strengthened our financial position and enabled further investment in technology, infrastructure, and talent, positioning the company for its next phase of growth.

In 2021, we were pleased to welcome Mercuria, a global commodity trading company, as an investor in Pretoria Energy Group. This strategic partnership enhanced our technical expertise and physical trading capabilities, further supporting our ability to scale and innovate within the renewable energy sector.

Expanding Capacity and Capability

Our growth continued through 2022 and 2023 with the commencement of major new projects, including:

  • A second AD plant at Chittering
  • Phase 2 of the Mepal AD plant
  • The acquisition of Roadgas, an engineering and gas refuelling station business

These developments expanded our renewable gas production capacity and allowed Pretoria Energy to move further into the decarbonisation of heavy goods vehicle (HGV) transport, supporting wider emissions reduction across the UK transport network.

Delivering at Scale

In 2024, we successfully commissioned and brought into full operation the Mepal plant extension, alongside the launch of Chittering 2. These assets significantly increased production capacity and ensured we could continue meeting the growing demand for renewable gas from both customers and the wider energy market.

Looking Ahead

As we move through 2025, Pretoria Energy remains firmly focused on the future. We are currently progressing the commissioning of Mepal 3 while beginning work on the expansion of Chittering 3—the next steps in our ongoing commitment to growth, innovation, and operational excellence.

Our Commitment

At Pretoria Energy, sustainability is not just a target—it underpins how we operate, invest, and grow. Through continued collaboration, strategic investment, and a relentless focus on safe delivery, we are proud to play a leading role in supporting the UK’s transition to a lower‑carbon energy system.

We look forward to sharing further updates as our journey continues.
